S4 pupils welcomed students from Langen to Aberdeen for the Scottish leg of the 2024 RGC German Exchange.

Collyhill House Captain and S6 pupil, Lock, set the tone with a true Scottish welcome by playing the bagpipes upon their arrival.

A tour of the school, regular school lessons, a city scavenger hunt, crazy golf at Codona’s and a trip to Crathes Castle were just some of the activities thoroughly enjoyed by the pupils. Our German exchange partners also had the opportunity to experience Founder’s Day.

Ms Speidel, Teacher of German, said: “It has been an absolute pleasure to run the German exchange for the second time this year. The relationships the pupils have been able to build with their exchange partners but also their partners’ families have been beautiful to see. The German pupils were extremely impressed with Robert Gordon’s College and the warm welcome they received from all pupils and staff. They thoroughly enjoyed their time in their host families and all the new aspects of life and culture in Aberdeen they were able to experience. It was a tearful farewell at the airport but luckily, Germany is not too far away and pupils can visit each other again in the future.”

Mr Campbell, Head of Languages, commented: “We were delighted to welcome our friends from Langen to Aberdeen for the second time. Hosting them has not only strengthened our ties but also provided invaluable experiences for everyone involved. Whilst exchanges can feel daunting initially, they offer a unique opportunity for growth and shared understanding. I would definitely encourage all pupils to consider signing up for future exchanges. They truly enrich our community and broaden our horizons, and are the best way to develop your language skills and build confidence and resilience.”

Both RGC pupils and families thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with their German counterparts. Lifelong friendships were formed, and cherished memories made. Auf Wiedersehen! Haste ye back!
