We are delighted to announce that Harry Wood, Class of 2024, has been shortlisted for the John Locke Essay Competition. This recognition places Harry among a select group of talented young writers, celebrated for their independent thought, depth of knowledge, clear reasoning, critical analysis and persuasive style.
Harry has been invited to an exclusive event in Mayfair at the end of September, where the competition winner will be announced. This is a fantastic opportunity for the finalists to engage with one another and professionals, however Harry will sadly miss the event as he is about to embark on a gap year in Shanghai before beginning his studies in economics at university. This is a significant accomplishment and reflects his hard work, intellectual curiosity, and passion for exploring complex ideas.
Harry commented: “I entered the essay competition because I want to study economics at university and, since I haven’t studied economics in school, I thought it would be a good way to learn more about the subject while practicing the writing skills I will need for university. It was definitely a pleasant surprise when I found out I was shortlisted.”
Mrs Johnson, Head of Business Management and Economics, added: "Being shortlisted for such a distinguished competition is a superb achievement. It is a remarkable milestone in Harry's academic journey, especially as he has not studied economics as a course."
Throughout his time at Robert Gordon’s College, Harry has pursued a wide range of interests including languages, music, sports. In addition, he has served as School Captain, leading the S6 year group through their final year of school.
The John Locke Essay Competition, named after the influential 17th-century English philosopher, seeks to encourage young minds to think critically and engage deeply with a range of thought-provoking topics. Open to pupils from around the world, the competition attracts entries from those who demonstrate a keen interest in philosophy, politics, economics, and history.
