As James (Class of 2026) looks back on his final year at RGC after joining in Nursery, he is celebrating an outstanding set of Advanced Higher results and preparing to take the next step in his academic journey, starting a medical degree at the University of Aberdeen in September.
James achieved A grades in Advanced Higher Chemistry, Mathematics, Music and Physics, demonstrating an impressive breadth of academic achievement across both STEM and the arts. His success in Physics was recognised with the Francis Morrison Prize for 1st in Advanced Higher Physics, while his contribution to the school’s musical life was celebrated with the Edith Young Memorial Prize for contribution to musical activities.
Reflecting on his time at RGC, James said: “I have some amazing memories from my final year at RGC, from time spent in the music department and science labs to musical performances and trips abroad."
His final year was about much more than academic success. James embraced a wide range of opportunities across school life, including taking on leadership responsibilities as House Captain of Blackfriars and as a Prefect.
Music has been a particularly important part of James’s school experience. From performing in bands at concerts and on tours, winning Young Musician in S3, to receiving recognition for his contribution to musical activities, he has made the most of opportunities to perform and collaborate with others.
Sport has also played a significant role. As a competitive swimmer, James represented the school at competitions across the country and achieved 1st place in the Boys’ Senior Swimming Gala. Alongside swimming, he was involved in the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and represented RGC as a Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet of Aberdeen, further contributing to his broad and varied experience beyond the classroom.
James also represented the school abroad at events and conferences, gaining experiences that extended his learning well beyond the RGC campus.
Looking ahead, James is now preparing for an exciting new chapter. His journey from Advanced Higher success to university study demonstrates the value of making the most of the academic, leadership, sporting and co-curricular opportunities available at school.
With outstanding Advanced Higher results, a wealth of experiences and a clear ambition for the future, James leaves RGC with an impressive record of achievement and plenty to look forward to.
