Schools and clubs from across the UK met at our Countesswells Sports Campus for the inaugural RGC Rugby 7s Tournament, marking a historic moment for Robert Gordon’s College and the national rugby community. Kicking off with a sunny start on a busy Saturday, the fields buzzed with excitement as teams geared up for a day of thrilling competition and camaraderie.

Mr McKay, Head of Rugby at Robert Gordon’s College, planned a busy programme to ensure a seamless experience for players and spectators alike. Matches were scheduled throughout the day across multiple pitches, allowing teams ample opportunity to showcase their skills and vie for victory. Spectators were treated to a feast of fast-paced rugby action, with each match delivering moments of breathtaking athleticism and skill.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the event, Mr McKay said: "The inaugural RGC Rugby 7s Tournament exceeded all expectations. It was wonderful to see Countesswells full with lots of rugby being played. With 30 teams involved and a total of 66 games played, it was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved, from the players to the coaches and spectators. The atmosphere was electric, and the level of competition was truly inspiring."

Throughout the day, the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie shone brightly, with teams exchanging handshakes and words of encouragement after each match. Off the field, food stalls and refreshment stands provided sustenance for hungry players and spectators, adding to the community spirit of the event.

Mr Macpherson, Head of College, highlighted: “Countesswells is the perfect venue for a major Rugby 7s tournament and we were confident it would be a success. To have 30 teams turn out for our inaugural tournament was just brilliant, and the quality of rugby was impressive. I thought it was great to see local clubs and schools in the north-east going up against teams from the central belt and England. This region has a really strong talent pool and we are determined to create more opportunities for young players to showcase their talents. We are already excited about next year!”

As the sun began to dip below the clouds and the final whistle blew on the last match of the day, there was a palpable sense of satisfaction and pride among all involved. The inaugural RGC Rugby 7s Tournament had been a resounding success, setting the stage for future editions to become fixtures on the rugby calendar. With memories made and friendships forged, the spirit of rugby had truly triumphed on the fields of Countesswells.
