Robert Gordon’s College was filled with the spirit of The Sound of Music as our Primary 7 pupils wowed audiences with their much-anticipated performance of the timeless classic. With energy and enthusiasm in abundance, the stage was transformed into the rolling Austrian mountainside, and the hills truly were alive with song, laughter, and talent.

From ‘Do-Re-Mi’ to ‘Edelweiss’, the pupils hit all the right notes, delivering memorable musical numbers and heartfelt performances that left the audience beaming from ear to ear. We were also absolutely delighted to welcome Gilcomston Primary, a local choir, and residents from residential care homes to enjoy the show on Wednesday morning. It was a toe-tapping celebration filled with laughter, music, and the true spirit of togetherness.

Aanya, who played Maria, said: “I auditioned and was cast to play the role of Maria Rainer, the governess. This role has been so much fun to play and by playing this part I have built self confidence and made wider friendships with people all across my year group. I have learned that in everything that I have done, whether it is learning how to sing to even putting on a wedding dress, the whole cast and teachers have helped us work together to make this wonderful performance come to life!”

Rory, Captain Von Trapp, commented: “In The Sound of Music I was cast as Captain Von Trapp. The show for me has been a phenomenal experience and playing a main character in the show has been amazing and has built up my confidence. The whole thing has been astonishing, from seeing the set being built, to the whole show coming together this week has been a great experience.”

Dhruv from the technical team added: “For the school show this year I auditioned for a role in the technical team. It was a privilege to be the first P7 year group to have P7's operating the lighting and sound desks. Throughout the show experience I have developed lots of technical theatre skills. For example, before I had no idea how to do anything, but now I can record cues and operate stage lighting.”

Mrs Massie and Mrs Rose shared: “Watching our pupils take to the stage and grow in confidence, discover their individual talents and support one another has been incredibly special. For those supporting the important behind-the-scenes work, gaining hands-on experience and playing such a vital role in bringing the whole production to life was equally rewarding. This production gave our pupils a chance to build on their art, drama, music, and tech skills whilst developing resilience, empathy, and self-belief in their final year of Junior School. The staff and pupils have worked incredibly hard to bring the story to MacRobert Hall and we are very proud of the final result! It is a true celebration of teamwork, imagination and community.”

The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria, a spirited young woman who becomes a governess for the seven children of widowed naval officer Captain von Trapp in Austria. Through music, love, and kindness, Maria brings joy and harmony to the family, helping them reconnect after the loss of their mother. Set against the backdrop of the looming threat of war, the story combines heartwarming family moments, memorable songs, and themes of courage, resilience, and following one’s heart.

The Primary 7 team would like to thank families and friends for their support throughout this journey, as pupils prepared for the show while fundraising for Kayleigh’s Wee Stars.
