Pupils throughout the school marked European Day of Languages yesterday.

Senior pupils celebrated the diversity of cultures our pupils come from and the benefits of learning other languages. S6 pupils delivered an assembly to S1 and S2 pupils.

Maggie S5 said: "Learning a foreign language opens up so many opportunities to you, whether it be making new friends or being able to live in a different country, so even if you don’t think you’ll like it, give it your best shot - you never know what might happen."

Samy (S6) shared: "If none of you guys attempt to pick up another language you yourself won’t be able to communicate with half the world, and will miss out on a lot of this world because of that. But overall pick up another language because who knows the opportunities it will open up for you in the future and with languages it’s always the more the better."

Ella (S6) highlighted: "This summer i went to Tanzania in Africa for 2 months to volunteer with a charity. Whilst i was over there i learnt some of the language, Swahili. One of our projects was going across schools and educating the youth about sustainability and health and sanitation. I delivered this lesson in Swahili and at the end we taught some English to the pupils. Learning some of the language allowed me to immerse myself into the culture and feel apart of the community and because of this i was able to build amazing memories and become friends with many different people from around the globe."

S2 pupils hosted Eat Your Way Around the World in The Craig Centre for Performing Arts where pupils enjoyed trying foods from different countries, face painting and testing their general knowledge with some quizzes. Pupils studying  French, German, Spanish or Mandarin spoke to their peers in the respective languages. The event raised £225 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
