On Sunday 2nd April, Counteswells opened its gates for the second year running to host the Caledonia Cup finals day. We welcomed over 600 players across 16 finals, with teams from all across the region participating on the day.
In the final fixture of the day, the RGC 1st XV met Howe of Fife in a rematch of the U18 Cup Final from last year, in which Howe of Fife came out on top. The year's game finished 53-28 in favour of RGC, with the home side controlling all facets of the game across the 70 minutes.
1st XV Head Coach Mr Riddle said: “Both the playing group and coaching team have all been eyeing up this fixture from the start of the competition. We set the goal to win the Caley Cup right at the start of the season, and we knew we would meet Howe of Fife in the latter part of the competition. We had a really close and competitive game at Duffus Park earlier in the season, and given the context of the fixture being a rematch of last year's final, we all needed no extra motivation when it came to preparation.
“The boys played some outstanding rugby on both sides of the ball and were deserved winners on the day. It has been a very long season, but the team has worked tirelessly since pre-season in August. Performances and results like this are the fruits of their labour. Adding this trophy to the National Schools Plate we won back in December makes for an incredibly successful season. I couldn’t be more proud of this group of players. They have been a privilege to work with and deserve recognition for their efforts this year.”
