After winning RGC’s S1-3 Young Musician of the Year in 2025, S2 pupil Max had the opportunity to represent the College in the Scottish Young Musician Independent Schools final.
Held at George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh, Max travelled with his family to the final, where he impressed the audience with his guitar skills.
Max shared: “Electric Guitar is not just about the notes you play but the sound that technical equipment creates. I was having some trouble with the sound check and got some words of technical advice and encouragement from my guitar teacher and Mrs Massie. I persevered and played my heart out to Anastasia by Slash, one of my favourite guitar songs of all time.
“Although not winning a prize, the whole experience was unforgettable and so interesting to watch other musicians perform from all over Scotland. I dedicated my performance to my gran who was in the audience. “
“I would like to thank Mrs Massie, Liam Bowie and the music department for helping me get there and giving me this opportunity which helped me become a better musician. I wish this year’s young musicians of the year at RGC good luck.”
Mrs Massie, Head of Creative Arts said: We are incredibly proud of Max for representing the college at a national level. He delivered a standout performance, playing to an exceptionally high standard for his age group. His impressive technical skill, musical maturity, and confident stage presence reflect both his dedication and his genuine passion for music.
"Max will also perform the same piece at this year’s Young Musician Final adjudication on 13 May. We look forward to seeing this year’s winner follow in his footsteps and attend the same event next year."
