The Robert Gordon's College community is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former pupil, Sir Ian Wood (Class of 1960), one of Scotland's most respected business leaders, philanthropists and one of the College's most devoted former pupils.

Throughout his life, Sir Ian remained immensely proud of his connection to Robert Gordon's College. The values and ethos of his school resonated deeply with his own beliefs, particularly the importance of widening access to education, creating opportunities for young people and enabling them to fulfil their potential. His commitment to education, opportunity and supporting future generations to be ambitious reflected a lifelong desire to make a positive difference, driven by his belief that providing opportunity and encouraging ambition was simply the right thing to do. 

Widely recognised as one of Scotland's most influential business figures, Sir Ian built an international reputation through The Wood Group before dedicating much of his later life to philanthropy and public service. His vision, leadership and commitment to Aberdeen and Scotland helped shape industries, strengthen communities and inspire generations of entrepreneurs, business leaders and young people.

While his professional achievements were extraordinary, those who knew Sir Ian speak just as warmly of his personal qualities. He was respected not only for his leadership, but for his humility, integrity, generosity and genuine interest in helping others succeed. He believed passionately in the power of education to transform lives and was a tireless advocate for creating opportunities for young people to fulfil their potential.

Robert Gordon's College has paid tribute to Sir Ian Wood's longstanding contribution to the school, recognising the significant impact of his support, vision and commitment to education over many decades. In 2015, Sir Ian and The Wood Foundation made a transformational £2.25 million donation to establish The Wood Foundation Centre for Science and Technology at Robert Gordon's College, creating the UK’s largest school teaching facility for STEM education and expanding on the school’s growth in innovation and philanthropy. This significant contribution has helped transform the College’s science and technology pathways, creating new opportunities for generations of pupils and ensuring Sir Ian’s legacy will continue to inspire and benefit the school community for many decades to come. 

His belief in the College and its values has played an important role in shaping its development, helping to expand opportunities for pupils in STEM, innovation and philanthropy while supporting the school's continued growth. Earlier this year, Sir Ian returned to the College to mark the tenth anniversary of The Wood Foundation Centre. During the visit, he was presented with the College's inaugural Pioneer Award in recognition of his exceptional contribution to education, philanthropy and innovation.

The partnership between Sir Ian, The Wood Foundation and Robert Gordon's College has created lasting opportunities for generations of pupils, reflecting a shared commitment to educational excellence, innovation and social impact. Sir Ian's encouragement, advice and generosity have left an enduring legacy within the College community. His influence will continue to be felt by future generations of pupils, staff and the wider school community for many years to come.

His legacy will continue to inspire and educate generations of Robert Gordon’s pupils, and he will be remembered with enormous gratitude and affection."

Sir Ian's influence extended far beyond business. Through his philanthropy, public service and impressive commitment to Aberdeen and Scotland, he demonstrated the difference that one individual can make through vision, determination and generosity.

The Robert Gordon's College community extends its deepest condolences to Lady Helen, the Wood family and all those whose lives were touched by Sir Ian. His legacy will live on through the countless people, organisations and communities he inspired and supported, and he will always be remembered as a major figure in the history of the College.
