Rugby

The volume of rain towards the end of the week resulted in water-logged pitches so all rugby against Granite City was cancelled on Saturday morning.

Girls’ Hockey

S2 held their House Hockey competition over the last couple of weeks during Games time with the girls having great fun dressing up in their House colours. The results were as follows: 1st Collyhill, 2nd Blackfriars, 3rd Sillerton, 4th Straloch.

Four of our teams enjoyed their last set of fixtures for 2019 on Saturday morning with a trip to Dollar Academy. The 2nd XI came away with a fantastic win, starting the match strongly which set the tempo for the rest of the game. POM was Alice who showed some great skills and composure. S3B worked very hard in their match but were unlucky not to get a better outcome, with their only goal scored being disallowed. POM was Niamh who was excellent on the field. There were also losses for the two P7 teams but as always the girls tried and worked hard and had as much fun as they could. Lexi P and Neha B were the two POM’s.

Unfortunately the home fixtures against Dollar Academy were cancelled due to frozen pitches. A further casualty of the weather was the 1st XI tie against Selkirk High School on Tuesday in the Scottish Plate Quarter Final.

The S3A team competed in the S3 Indoor Hockey Festival hosted by Cults Academy on Saturday morning. The girls played against Cults, St Margaret’s and Aberdeen Grammar with the Cults B team finishing undefeated and overall winners.

Netball

At the start of the week the 1st VII netball team travelled to Edinburgh to play St George’s School in the next round of the Scottish Cup. Tight marking and speedy attack won the girls the game and great defensive play from captain Piper won her Player of the Match. Miss Stewart was very happy with a great performance from everyone in the team and another win to take them into the next round.

The 2nd VII travelled to in Stonehaven on Monday to play Mackie Academy in the Aberdeen League. The Mackie team were stronger on the day but there were some great performances from our RGC girls. POM was Zoe B for her flying interceptions right into the last quarter under serious pressure from confident and accurate shooting opposition.

On Thursday we entered two S3 teams into the ASSNA Junior Tournament. This annual event brings together schools from all over the North East to compete against each other. Both teams tried their best and enjoyed the experience despite not reaching the semi-finals. It is great to see the netball performance level in the local area improving greatly. The overall winners of the tournament were Albyn and Aberdeen Grammar who drew their match in the final.

Basketball

The RGC basketball team played Millburn Academy away in Inverness in the Scottish Cup on Tuesday afternoon with Millburn coming away with the win by just 1 point. The match was back and forth throughout the first quarter. In the second, Millburn pushed the lead to double figures only to see RGC fight back to get within 6 at the half. RGC continued their strong play into the third quarter and had a lead of 3 going into the final frame. Millburn shot some impressive baskets from their point guard in the fourth quarter building a 5 point lead with just 2 minutes to play. RGC held Millburn scoreless the rest of the way to get within one point, but couldn’t come away with the decisive basket. A tough loss for RGC, but the team did themselves and the College proud with a great effort. Alex D led the team in scoring with 21 points, and Seth E was commended by the opposing coach for his rebounding and defence. Good luck to Millburn in the next round.

BBC Festival of Sport

A group of 14 S4-S5 pupils attended this event at Aberdeen Sports Village on Friday afternoon. The festival was running alongside various other events over the weekend which were linked to the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards taking place in Aberdeen on Sunday evening. The pupils were given the chance to try out various sports and had the honour of being able to hold the Calcutta Cup, the trophy which the Scotland and England rugby teams play for during their annual 6 Nations encounter. Scotland are the current holders of the Calcutta Cup.

Team of the Week

1st VII netball who beat St George’s School, Edinburgh, 38-12 in their recent Scottish Cup match which moves them into the last 16 of the Gold competition. Well done girls and good luck in the next round.
