Athletics

Albyn and Lathallan visited us at Countesswells on Wednesday for a friendly P5-7 fixture.  Pupils competed in 600m or 400m, 200m and 60m on the track then Shot Put and Long Jump in the field. The event was topped off with 4x100m relays for every age group, for both boys and girls. The match was held in lovely sunshine and good spirits with competitors getting to know each other between events. There were 32 participants from RGC in total and everyone had the chance to compete in at least 2 events.

Four relay teams travelled to Glasgow for the Scottish Schools Relay Championships at Hutcheson’s Grammar School on Friday. The teams had worked hard on practising their changeovers in the build up to the event and this was evident during the competition as our changeovers were mostly done very well. Two highlights of the day were the U15 boys just missing out on a place in the final with the 7th fastest time but giving a great performance. The U15 girls took the performance of the day with a silver medal in their event, just being pipped by George Watson’s by .05s! Well done to everyone who was involved.

Cricket

On Wednesday afternoon at Countesswells an all star staff team captained by V Hedge took the field against a youthful 1st XI in the annual staff vs pupils match. After an erratic first over, the staff team settled and used their bowling variations well. Some excellent fielding from Mr Harper and Mr Sutton helped to limit the 1st XI to 139, for 9 of their 20 overs. After a delicious tea, the opening partnership of Mr Sutton and Mr Lowden got the staff team off to a flying start scoring 38 off 4 overs. Some decisive running from Mr Prentice saw the staff needing 24 from the last 2 overs. Unfortunately the total could not be chased. This was a very enjoyable game, played in the right spirit.

On Saturday morning 24 pupils took part in the annual Cricket sixes competition. Pupils ranged in ages from P5 through to S3, therefore, we conditioned games so that boys and girls could represent their House. The first match of the tournament was slow, but as the pupils understood how they could score runs more easily, totals began to rise. The format also meant that pupils had to be more dynamic in the field. The ‘Sillerton’ side led by Tanish K were winners of the tournament with 2 wins and a draw.

Tennis

The Boys tennis teams travelled down the road to play Dollar in a friendly competition on Saturday morning. This match was a perfect opportunity to get some serious match practice in before the Scottish Cup Final on Monday 5th June. The team, led by the talismanic Kevin S (S2), found the faster, bouncier tennis courts at Dollar quite difficult to master and we quickly found ourselves down by 3 matches to nil. However, the ever bubbly duo of Rohith S and Liam B played well to win their singles and also triumphed in their doubles match to draw the match at 3 all. The final matches in the doubles went to the experienced Dollar boys who ended up winning 6 - 3. A very enjoyable day at Dollar for a team of boys whose Tennis is rapidly improving.

P6-S3 Championship Sports Day

We were very lucky with a beautiful sunny day on Saturday for our annual P6-S3 Championship Sports Day at Countesswells. Pupils had worked hard to secure their place in the finals after the recent heats and gave their best on the day. Our P5 pupils were a welcome addition to the day, experiencing their first taste of competitive athletics. There was a real buzz around Countesswells with many parents coming along to support and cheer from the sidelines. The House relays were a real highlight at the end of the event, followed by the presentation of trophies by Mr Macpherson. In total 8 school records were broken across the individual track and field events as well as 2 House Relay records: P7 Girls (Straloch) and S2 Girls (Sillerton). Straloch had a fantastic day, coming 1st in the overall House event and also winning the Andy Dougall House Relay Cup!
