The S1 7/9-a-side House Football tournament was a hotly contested event. Over 40 of our current S1 boys and girls turned up to play. It was Straloch who ran out winners, beating Silerton 2-1 in the final game. In the 3rd place play off, Blackfriars managed to overcome a player number disadvantage to beat Collyhill. The standard of play was excellent throughout, thank you to all that came along and made the day so enjoyable.
The S2 House Football event was equally as popular. It was a case of deja vu with Straloch and Sillerton winning through to meet in the final, with Collyhill and Blackfriars going head-to-head in the 3rd place play off. Straloch came out winners again, this time needing sudden death penalties after a 1-1 stalemate during normal time. Collyhill managed to exact some revenge for their S1 defeat, by winning convincingly against Balckfriars in the 3rd place play off. The event was well attended, with over 40 of our S2s coming along to play. Again, thank you to everyone for attending and for making the day such an enjoyable one.
S1/2 finally enjoyed some cricket in appropriate weather on Wednesday with a convincing victory over Albyn. RGC batted first and there were some lovely shots played by all, finishing on 83 after 18 overs, having lost just 3 wickets. The fielding performance was something to admire with some lovely bowling. James L opened the bowling, taking a wicket off his second ball and keeping Albyn scoreless off the remaining 3. There were also 2 wickets for Callum R with some lovely bowling and plenty of other wickets taken by the rest of the team through consistently accurate bowling and superb catches in the field. We took 9 wickets in total, keeping Albyn to a significantly lower score. Overall this was a great game played in the right spirit and good sportsmanship was shown by all.
On Saturday morning High School of Dundee travelled to join us at Countesswells with 12 pupils and we played a pairs game. Each pupil had the opportunity to bowl, bat and field. Lots of learning was gained in a friendly environment which for many of our pupils was their first game.
Sadly High School of Dundee called off the S1 & 2 fixtures on Saturday morning so we had a combined S1/S2 hard ball game on the Main Square (thanks Donny the groundsman for the excellent pitch conditions). This was a really good experience for these talented young players to play in beautiful sunshine on the College’s main wicket. Riyansh K’s team were 100 for 5 and Nicol M’s team were all out for 90. There was some really good batting, bowling and fielding from the players.
The Athletics team took part in an excellent triangular match with High School of Dundee and Edinburgh Academy on Saturday morning in Dundee. We travelled with 36 pupils in high spirits and confidence. Our athletes competed very well across many events including 100m, 200m, 800m, Hurdles, Shot Put, Long Jump, High Jump, Javelin and relays. We finished overall first in S1 boys, S2 girls and S3 boys and overall second in S1 girls, S2 boys and S3 girls.
Individual performances which stood out were Finlay R in the 800m, Tolu O in the Shot Put, Anneke N in the 800m, Jamie R in the hurdles, Katy R in the sprints and Kamsi C in the High Jump. Overall this was an excellent team performance and the pupils should be delighted with their efforts on Saturday.
On Tuesday we took a group of P5-S3 pupils across to the Paul Lawrie Foundation where they were hosting the Aberdeen & Shire Par 3 Championships. This was a great event for our talented golfers and another excellent opportunity to play against children from other schools.
Robert Gordon’s College hosted the Road to Wimbledon Finals at Countesswells on Saturday. The weather was blazing sunshine throughout and the tennis on show was fiercely competitive. In the girls semi finals Saso A (S2) played Caitlin B (P7) in a fast four format match that went to 3 - 3. In the tie breaker the match was finally won by Saso 10 points to 8, so it was so close!. In the final, Saso faced the very talented Annabel A (P5) and again there were some high quality rallies in a tense match. Saso finally won the match and became the College representative in the Regional Finals. Well done to all the girls who took part.
The boys finals showed the number of quality players the College has in the S1 - S3 age range. A lot of the matches went to a tie break after both players drew at 3 games each. The final was played out between Kevin S (S2) and Oran McG (S2) and it was really great to see the long rallies with both players changing pace and direction. Eventually Kevin’s match experience told and he will represent the College in the regional Finals.
The final event of the day was the boys under 18 Doubles Championships with 32 participants! The top seeds of Harrison S and Nilav C (both S4) powered their way through their opponents to book a place in the final. Second seeds, Leon R and George I (both S4) had some determined and vocal young opponents to beat before they also reached the final. The final itself was a very tense affair with George and Leon gradually building up points to put their opponents under increasing pressure. This pressure eventually told with Leon and George winning the final by a comfortable margin. They will represent the College along with our singles winners in the Road to Wimbledon regional finals.
Good luck to all our Champions and well done to everyone who took part as you all made it such a fun day.
Our young sports people were out on the water pitch at Countesswells again on Saturday morning practising their throwing, jumping and teamwork skills. They played the ‘train game’ which was a fantastic way of learning how to work as a team, collecting more passengers on your route to complete the task. We look forward to running the next session this Saturday.

Our TOTW from week ending 7th May was S3 Cricket who went down to a Loretto recently in the opening round of the Scottish Cup and came away with a convincing performance and result under the excellent stewardship of Mr Fogiel.
