A number of pupils from the College have achieved great success in this year’s UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge.

Out of the 38 pupils who participated, 8 of the pupils achieved gold awards, 16 silver and 9 bronze; the highest proportion of pupils earning a certificate in the history of the College participating in the UKMT Challenges.

Mr Fogiel, Head of Mathematics said: “RGC pupils have a long history of strong performances in these competitions, but the 2021 Senior Mathematics Challenge results are the best on record. The pupils have done sensationally well and are a credit to themselves and the College.”

Four of the pupils who gained Gold Awards, Jack C (S6), Henry J (S5), Yersin O (S6) and Hana P (S3) have qualified for the British Mathematical Olympiad, which takes place on Thursday 2 December.

The other Gold Award successes, Keir M (S5), Kory B (S5), Shuban K (S5) and Ilaria Z (S4) have automatically qualified for the Andrew Jobbings Senior Kangaroo paper, which takes place on the same day.

Mathematics continues to be a popular course choice at Higher and Advanced Higher with 70% of S5 pupils studying Higher and 30% S6 pupils studying Advanced Higher. At Advanced Higher, pupils interested in Mathematics have the option to choose from Pure Mathematics, Statistics or Mathematics of Mechanics.

In S4, pupils can follow either the National 5 Mathematics course or the National 5 Applications of Mathematics course which both courses lead on to progression to a Higher qualification. Participation in national competitions are also encouraged and the opportunities available both within and beyond the classroom are unrivalled.
