Three musicians from the RGC Pipe Band have formed a band in a bid to win the opportunity to play with the Red Hot Chilli Pipers and enjoy a VIP backstage experience at one of their gigs.

Primary 6 pupils, Rory M (Piper), Alex W (Piper) and Alex B (Snare Drummer) aka “RO-LEX Dos” have been playing virtually together during lockdown, until more recently where they were able to play in a local park, socially distanced. Performing a cover of “Pirates of the Caribbean” they are competing with 17 bands in the Piping 4 Pupils event hosted by Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums.

Rory commented: “We are all big fans of the Chilli Pipers so when we saw the competition we jumped at the chance. We could choose a cover version or our own composition. We learnt the music from scratch but had to amend some of the orchestral sections and Alex B worked out his own drum score too.”

Mr Sumner said: “This has been a popular competition and it is great to see members of our band form together to try and win the opportunity to play with a band they admire. It is not an easy task rehearsing virtually, however our pipers and drummers are very enthusiastic about their music and always striving to perform to the best of their ability. We wish them the best of luck and will be watching and supporting this weekend.”

Mrs Menzies highlighted: “We are all really proud of them for working at this - they love their piping/drumming and being able to continue with their lessons and pipe band practices during lockdown has been a real boost for them. We are looking forward to seeing their video shown on Saturday night and the results on Sunday.”

Watch the final performances live on the Red Hot Chilli Pipers Facebook Page or Piping4Pupils via Instagram at 7.30pm on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 June. There is a public vote on Saturday night. The winners will be announced from 7.30pm on Sunday 28 June
